Two Awards at Wasatch Camera Club Competition PDF Print E-mail

The Wasatch Camera Club sponsors bimonthly competitions that are judged by professionals. Each competition is comprised of themed and non-themed submissions and, as well, the images submitted should be classified as novice, intermediate, advanced and master, based on the photographer's assessed skill level and how long the individual has been submitting and winning awards. This month the theme was "Chiaroscuro."

As usual, I submitted two (the max) images to the open category and two as well to the themed category. The open category included images from my recent trip to Zion National Park, while the themed entries were a bit more eclectic: and image from a recent local concert of the bluegrass band Hot Buttered Rum and a second photo of the Getty museum.

I thought I had a strong contender in the themed category for the violin player but that image did not place. Instead the Getty image took Honorable Mention. My Copper Waters, Left Fork of North Creek took 1st place in the open, intermediate category. My congrats to all who submitted as well as those who took home a ribbon.

You may view all of the submissions on the WCC's competition page. Some very nice work was displayed and the judges' critiques were very helpful.

Project Leadership with a View Book Published PDF Print E-mail

In collaboration with Frank Saladis, PMP -- a renowned project management teacher and lecturer -- I have published a new book, entitled Project Leadership with a View on my Blurb site. You can preview and, of course, purchase it there. The book pairs project management aphorisms (truisms in the form of leadership guidance) with photos I have taken in Utah, Japan and many countries in Europe. I must personally thank Frank for the great idea and wonderful opportunity to put this together with him. We are looking forward already to volume II!

  • From the introduction of the book:

Leadership is most often expressed through words such as “vision”, “character”, “motivation”, and “shared values”. Sometimes we must go beyond words and draw upon the world around us for inspiration and innovation. Leaders maintain an awareness of their surroundings but they also go beyond the familiar or what is seen through ordinary eyes and look for new ways to take their organizations or their teams to new levels of performance. Project Leadership With a View provides the leader with a visual tour of the world around us and creates a connection between the wonders of nature, the accomplishments of humanity, and the will and aspirations of the leaders who wish to guide their teams effectively, renew the will to succeed, and to establish a greater sense of personal value within themselves and their teams.

Wasatch Camera Club Mentoring PDF Print E-mail

I was asked by Will Thompson to participate as one of five mentors in the Wasatch Camera Club's first Mentoring program meeting. The goal was to have five differnet photgraphers talk about their approach to photography, methodologies, tools, workflow, etc. The photographers ranged from the relatively-new-to cameras to the still-shootin'-film. In addition to myself there was Steve Scott, the president of WCC, Scott Stringham, a Great Salt Lake afficiando, Mike Julian, a major player in the let's-push-HDR-to-the-outer-limits world of photography, and Keith Monsoor who is making the transition from film to digital.

I presented three images that highlighted my differnet approaches, technologies/techniques and projects. In doing so, I stepped the viewers through the workflow of how each image was created. The images ranged from High Dynamic Range photography to Infrared and finally panoramic film scanned to digital and converted to B&W. I have created a PDF of my presentation and it may be downloaded (+7MB in size).
